Helen Hatch is a current member of Minnesota Dance Theatre, and independent choreographer. A Minnesota native, Ms. Hatch began training at Ballet Arts Minnesota and upon graduation from high school relocated to New York City, having been accepted into The Ailey/Fordham BFA program. Under the guidance of Kazuko Hirabayashi, her love of choreography developed, and in her senior year, she was one of two students chosen to present an evening of choreography at the Ailey Citigroup Theater in Manhattan. For this performance she earned a Dance Honors in Choreography. In addition to presenting work in New York, Ms. Hatch’s choreography was performed throughout Mexico and Guatemala by the JUNTOS Collective.
In 2011, her choreography was selected to be a part of the Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Festival, which is part of the nations longest running dance festival, Jacob’s Pillow. Inside/Out is reserved for up and coming choreographers. In 2012, after relocating back to Minneapolis, Minnesota Monthly selected Ms. Hatch as one of two dancers in their “10 Artists to Watch,” stating that she “embod[ies] ballet’s tension between technique and emotion. In her own choreography, blending ballet with vigorous American movement, this edginess leaves you breathless.”
